YONG PENG: More than 22,000 primary and secondary school teachers have requested for a transfer with some 3,000 applications approved in the past few months.
Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong said most wanted inter-state transfers while the rest asked to be transferred from one district or department to another.
All applications for December 2012 were made through online form, e-G Tukar, he said.
“It is impossible to approve all 22,000 applications as too many teachers want to move. For Kelantan alone, more than 2,000 teachers asked to be transferred to the state compared with only 100 teachers who want out.
“Many teachers want to leave Johor as well, but it will be a problem to allow the transfer of all the teachers out of the state,” said the Ayer Hitam MP after visiting St Stephan Church here yesterday.
Dr Wee said there were a number of factors that the ministry must consider before approving the applications.
Among them were applicants' seniority, options of the teachers and the subjects that they taught, he added.
“We have to also look at applications based on medical reasons of their spouses, children and their own. Those are the cases that would be given priority.”
He said it was not easy to handle a huge number of transfers within a short period.
“We can only apologise. It is not that we don't want to approve the transfer, it's just impossible to allow all the transfers now,” he added.
