What is a (#) Hashtag?
Copied from hashtags ; a hashtag is an easy way for Twitter users to categorize Tweets that share a common topic or belong to a particular group. The hashtag is used to highlight keywords or topics within a Tweet, and can be placed anywhere within a post.

For instance, let say you are talking about yahoo. So, you are using a hashtag like
#yahoo. So, #yahoo is actually a topic of a discussion. In your tweet this hashtag
is converted to a link and by clicking on it, it will show you all those
people and their tweets who use the same tag.

By the way, Facebook does not support (#) Hashtag. If you see (#) Hashtag on the Facebook, it is because the person has a twitter and facebook account connected together. Once that person is tweeting about something and using a twitter hashtag, it also posted to the facebook automatically. But the hashtag posted does not work as facebook doesn't support hashtag.
